Overview

Qabilah is an Arabic professional social platform that combines recruitment, professional networking, knowledge sharing, and paid services into a single experience.

I joined the project after its initial release and, throughout most of my time there, became the primary Front-End Engineer responsible for developing and maintaining the majority of the features users interact with today.

My work covered major product areas including recruitment, professional profiles, communities, paid services, authentication, push notifications, and Progressive Web App capabilities, while continuously improving the application's architecture, maintainability, and scalability.

This contribution helped support a platform that later grew to more than 52,000 users.

02

The Challenge

When I joined the project, the platform already had an initial foundation, but its roadmap included a significant number of new features and product improvements.

The challenge was to continuously deliver new functionality while maintaining a stable production environment, improving the existing codebase, and evolving the front-end architecture without slowing down future development.

In addition, the platform required robust authentication, authorization, subscription management, push notifications, and a seamless experience across devices.

03

My Role

Throughout most of my time on the project, I was the primary Front-End Engineer responsible for developing and maintaining a large portion of the platform's functionality, including:

  • Developing and shipping many of the features currently available on the platform.
  • Maintaining and improving large parts of the existing front-end codebase.
  • Designing reusable components and scalable front-end modules.
  • Building authentication flows using OAuth (Google).
  • Implementing Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
  • Integrating Stripe subscription workflows and paid services.
  • Integrating Firebase Cloud Messaging for push notifications.
  • Building and enhancing Progressive Web App (PWA) capabilities.
  • Collaborating closely with the Backend and Product teams to design APIs and transform product requirements into production-ready features.
  • Working directly with users to investigate issues, joining debugging sessions, and helping identify practical solutions for real-world problems.
  • Representing Qabilah as a speaker during an online event, where I introduced the platform and answered attendees' questions for several hours.

My responsibilities extended beyond front-end development. I actively collaborated with users and the product team, turning real user feedback into product improvements and new features that enhanced the overall experience.

Process

  1. 01

    Understanding the Product

I first focused on understanding the existing architecture, product workflows, and business requirements before introducing new functionality, ensuring that every new feature integrated smoothly with the existing system.

  2. 02

    Planning

Each feature was planned with long-term maintainability in mind, emphasizing reusable components, modular architecture, and minimal technical debt.

  3. 03

    Development

Using React, Next.js, and TypeScript, I developed a wide range of production-ready features while focusing on:

    • Scalable architecture.
    • Reusable UI components.
    • Feature-based project organization.
    • User experience improvements.
    • Sustainable code quality.
  4. 04

    Testing

Before releasing any feature, I validated:

    • Authentication flows.
    • OAuth integrations.
    • User permissions.
    • Subscription states.
    • Push notification behavior.
    • Cross-device compatibility.
    • Issues reported by users and the product team.
  5. 05

    Launch

Features were released incrementally to production, followed by continuous monitoring, user feedback analysis, and iterative improvements. Over time, the platform evolved with many of the features developed during my tenure and continued growing beyond 52K users.

Lessons Learned

Working on a live product used by thousands of people taught me that front-end engineering is about much more than building user interfaces.

It begins with understanding users, continues through making thoughtful architectural decisions, and ends with delivering reliable, scalable software that can evolve over time.

One of the most valuable parts of this journey was learning from Mohamed El Mahdy and Samah Daabas. Their mentorship, technical reviews, and countless engineering discussions helped shape the way I think about software development—encouraging me to focus not only on writing better front-end code, but on building scalable, maintainable products.
